Individual Tracker

Afternoon my friends!

Earlier today I shared something on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jmgdm_ive-developed-an-interactive-scouting-activity-7430870569312686080-qhaq?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAACkZbI8BFdNmBvrYGtys5s8SdtzPsBx13sE But I felt that it could be a bit better. I decided to work on it again, and included a Timeline (where you can click on each event and visualize it on the pitch plot)

Also, I added a percentile compared to the players who play in the same position as the tracked one, as can be seen below.

What do you think of this? Would you add any other functionality?

Please let me know!

While it depends on the target user, I prefer vertical pitch where our team of interest plays from bottom to top: https://lnkd.in/ghic2bCF

Hi guys, and thank you for joining! 👋

What first pulled you into football, and what made you stay?

We all arrived here through different paths: coaching, analysis, scouting, performance, media, tech, academia…

But there’s usually a moment: a match, a person, a question... that triggered everything.

What was yours?

What made you decide that football wasn’t just something you watched, but something you wanted to understand, improve, or build around?

My journey began eight years ago when I started the DataScience EngD program at the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science in the Netherlands 🎒

I thought that to be a successful data scientist, focusing on one sector and gaining domain knowledge was essential, as data skills alone are not enough 🔍

So I asked myself which area could keep me motivated in the long term 🤔

Banking?

Manufacturing?

Energy?

...

None of them felt motivating enough 🫠

That's when I decided to try football ⚽

If it worked, great 😊

If not, at least I wouldn't regret not trying 😉

That is how the self-learning process started, with me spending one day each weekend in the Eindhoven University of Technology's library, going through football data papers and trying to understand them 📚

And the journey continues with all its ups and downs 🛣️

The Line Breaking Illusion

Make yourself a coffee and take a few minutes for this. I’ve just published a piece exploring something we often take for granted in football analytics: that breaking a defensive line automatically means creating real advantage. In this article, I try to separate structural disruption from actual threat realization, and examine what happens when we stop equating progression with impact. If you’re interested in measuring what truly changes a game, this might be worth your time. As always, I genuinely welcome different perspectives and open discussion ☕ 👇 The Line Breaking Illusion: Structural Disruption, Threat Realization, and the Measurement of Tactical Truth

A community for football data analysts, researchers, and practitioners focused on advancing the understanding of the game through quantitative methods.

This space is dedicated to discussing models, metrics, and methodologies across areas such as expected value frameworks, possession analysis, off ball evaluation, spatial control, player impact modeling, and tactical data interpretation. Members are encouraged to share research ideas, code snippets, visualizations, datasets, and critical reflections on existing approaches.

The objective is not consensus, but clarity. We prioritize methodological rigor, transparent assumptions, reproducibility, and constructive debate. Whether you work in a professional club environment, academia, or independent research, this forum exists to elevate the analytical standards of football discourse.
